Yang had agreed to meet us in the morning for breakfast, but due to the time change Chad and I both woke up early and made our way to the hotel breakfast. We paid about $2 each for the buffet; it was a typical Chinese breakfast with fried rice, steamed rolls, hard-boiled eggs, and other savory dishes. Mostly we were stared at by groups of schoolchildren who were also getting breakfast. Yang met us later and we walked a few blocks to his university where we got a quick tour of his lab space and met the other professors with whom he collaborates. Then we were led to Yang’s boss’ sitting room, where we drank tea and chatted with some of his students. When I told Yang we were coming to China, he had convinced me to give a presentation on my labwork to his lab, in exchange for our hotel stay. It seemed like a pretty good deal to us, so later that morning I set up my PowerPoint and talked about Campylobacter for an hour or so. There were 30 students or so and I wasn’t sure how well they would understand my talk, but there were a lot of good questions after the talk so I think they all followed it well. After the talk, we went over to one of the restaurants on campus where we dined in a private room with about 10 of the lab students and another professor, Dr. Wu. I never saw so much food in my life. Dr. Wu kept ordering dishes; we had fish soup, cold salmon, fried pineapple bread, rib soup, dumplings, and more. As with the night before, there was more than enough food and this theme continued ever time we ate with Yang or any other Chinese.

After lunch Yang had arranged for two of his students, Dong and Xiao, to take us to the Summer Palace. The Summer Palace is exactly what it sounds like: a summer residence for the emperor and his family. Basically it is a series of palace buildings on a hill overlooking Kunming Lake, and surrounding parkland. Our ‘guides’ insisted on paying our way and we headed in. Since we weren’t on a tour and there wasn’t much in the way of explanatory signs, we just wandered around and looked at the scenery. Usually you can ride boats on the lake but today was particularly windy and they weren’t offering rides. After walking all the way around the lake we arrived at another one of the entrances to the palace grounds and decided to call it a day. Before we left, I got my first request to be in a photo. A Chinese girl really wanted to have her picture taken with me, so I obliged and posed with her. Her family seemed delighted.

That evening we went to a restaurant that was known for its Peking Duck, which Yang showed us how to eat. There is a particular sauce and you roll the slices in a flat dough to eat. Very tasty! In the back of the restaurant you could see the room with a giant fire-oven, where they were hanging ducks to roast. Then the chef would cut off the meat in little slices; a particularly skilled chef is supposed to be able to get 108 slices from a duck. Once again we ate too much, and another of Yang’s students, Na, agreed to take us to the grocery store to pick up some essentials. In our part of town was a multi-storied shopping center with a grocery store on the bottom, then a mall, and restaurants on top. The mall wasn’t like malls in the US; it was just an open floor with small spaces occupied by each ‘shop’. You could just wander between them all to find what you wanted and bargain for the price with the seller. We didn’t have much energy for the mall atmosphere and headed down to the grocery store (a Merry Mart). This was complete chaos. There was food everywhere and people everywhere. There were way more fruits and vegetables than we see at the market in Iowa, and I didn’t recognize most of them. Chad took lots of pictures. Mostly we just needed some bottled water (you can’t drink the tapwater in China) but we also took the opportunity to get some sample beers, candy, and exotic fruits. Way cheap.

We arrived in Beijing 9pm local time and were greeted by my friend Yang. He was a visiting student in my lab for a year and we became quick friends. He has since returned to China and is now a professor at China Agricultural University in Beijing. I promised to visit him someday, and now we are here! He brought his boss’ driver with him and we all rode back to the northwest side of town, where CAU and our hotel (the Yiquan Mountain Villa) were located. Yang insisted on taking us out for Beijing dumplings, so we stopped at a place that was clearly about to close and Yang convinced them to take our order. We didn’t want dumplings that badly, but Yang really wanted us to have them, so we did. They were nice steamed dumplings and we didn’t finish half of what was ordered – there was enough food for six total. Afterward Yang took us to our hotel and got us checked in and made sure we knew how a hotel room worked. We were pretty beat so after agreeing on our plan for the next day, we were out.

We had an 8am flight this morning out of Des Moines, which oddly, was cheaper to fly out of than Chicago. From Chicago we flew to Seoul, which was a horrendous 12-hour flight (my longest, but Chad has been to New Zealand so he did fine). We were on Korean Air, and all the flight attendants were very pretty. They served traditional Korean food for one of the meals, and it came with instructions to explain how to mix the ingredients. We all had our own screens so we could watch movies, which is how we spent most of the flight. The Seoul airport was very bright (this stood out to me as my body felt it should be nighttime). We got some giant beers to celebrate our ocean crossing and watched some soccer on TV. We were thrilled at paying 18,000 won for beers (not that $9 a beer was good, but the high number was a novelty).

We decided to go to China for our honeymoon for several reasons: neither of us had been to Asia, we didn’t want a ‘typical’ honeymoon, and a dear friend of mine was begging us to visit him in his home country. So, we bought some tickets for three weeks in China, got our visas, and checked out lots of books at the library. Some were guide books, some were picture books, and a couple novels that took place in China. We read through and each made a list of places we wanted to visit. I got out a map and consulted the online train schedules and planned a route for us that made the most sense. We had to leave some places out; visiting China is really about choosing which places not to visit as there is plenty to see. We both plan on only taking one carry-on and seeing as much as possible. Excitement level is high!

Thanks to our friends at GoogleMaps, we can now zoom into areas of the world and look at the lay of the land in surprising detail. In support of this and in order to give insight into my daily life, here is the farm at which I work, from above.

I am here.

Props to Chad for some champion labeling. So the Mill is the actual mill where actual milling occured. The water from the pond combined with the power of gravity ran the generator for the mill. It still works. Attached to the mill is the main house, where the family lives. I am not allowed in there, for fear that I might steal the silver. The little white building to the east of the mill is the farm kitchen complete with electricity and a sink. Above that is a little room where I stayed when I first arrived. There is also a workshop with welders and saws, pumps, and an air compressor. Tonda, the handyman, makes a lot of things happen from this workshop. There are also various items stored here, as well as under the mill. This is where I found my bike.

The barn is not really used as a barn except that straw is stored there. It is where we eat lunch and there are lots of art supplies here. The vegetable gardens, flower garden, and greenhouse is where I care for corn, tomatoes, beans, peas, carrots, squash, sunflowers, turnips, radishes, onions, strawberries, cauliflower, lettuce, cabbage, pumpkins, and multiple herbs. Also there is a cherry tree.

The rabbits have pens near the chickens. We had 8 chickens but now there are only 6, as a certain dog had a taste for farm-fresh chicken. The evil goat lives to the east. The horses live in the southernmost paddock, except when they escape. Then they live in the other paddock until the fence is repaired.

Every year in Karlový Vary the town holds an international film festival. I have always wanted to go, but my previous trips to the Czech Republic have been in June and May, and the festival is always held the first week in July. This year I had the chance, so I went on opening day (July 3rd) to check it out. I had looked online (www.kviff.com) to see what films looked interesting. There are hundreds of films shown, and tickets only cost about 3 dollars. You can buy them online ahead of time, but I forgot about this and did not get any.

So Friday the 3rd I showed up, ready for my one day of film-viewing, and all the films were sold out already. The tickets offices work like this: the day before and the day of a film, you can but tickets for it. When they are gone, they are gone. Except for a certain number of press tickets. Press people can go get tickets for free whenever, but an hour before a film starts, any press tickets that are left over go on sale to the general public. These were the only tickets available to me, and damn if it wasn´t like being on the NYSE floor after the opening bell. Everyone crowds around the ticket office, waiting until the clock strikes the correct time, then all hell breaks loose and people get pushy and try to get the attention of the box office attendant. Most of them don´t speak English, so you have to know the Czech title of the film, or you waste precious time and piss off everyone around you. My first go at this left me with no tickets, so I camped out at the bar conveniently located next to the box office and waited until the next round. I did successfully get a ticket to “Nejlepší filmy Festivalu krátkých filmů Praha” (The Best Films from the Prague Short Film Festival).

For viewing, we all packed into one of five theaters running during the festival, and there was no air conditioning of any sort. Additionally, the theaer I was in was one of the temporary theaters, which was actually an inflatable room made from the same material as those bouncy castles. If you can imagine a bouncy castle with walls, no ventilation, and 100 sweaty people, these were my viewing conditions. However, the film was great. There was one Australian film, one Belgian film, one Czech, one Icelandic, and one from New Zealand. They all had Czech and/or English subtitles. I loved them all! Here is a synopsis for each: http://www.kviff.com/en/program/115/

After that film I wandered around some more, got hydrated, ate some oplatký and caught the bus back to Plzeň. I really wanted to stay another day and worship Miloš Foreman at the red carpet, but I had to be back at the farm for chores. Such is the life of a working girl.

Recently I got a couple days off from the grind and decided to relax for a day in Sušice then head up to Karlový Vary for a day at their film festival. Most buses from Miřenice to anywhere entertaining leave at the crack of dawn, but main bus lines run out of Sušice, so my plan had been to find a cheap bed in Sušice then go directly to Karlový Vary the next morning. Unfortunately all the really cheap beds were taken, and since I’m only willing to pay so much for the convenience of getting up late, I decided to head back home in the evening. Now I was hurrying to the bus station because by the time I had been rejected by all the cheap bed people, it was getting dangerously close to the time for my bus’ departure. When I got to the station, I was checking the schedule when a bus heading in my direction pulled up. I got on and said I wanted to go to Miřenice, but the driver said he only went to Hradek (only a third of the way to Miřenice). I started to get off the bus, but he said I could catch a bus to Miřenice in Hradek. This sounded excellent to me so I paid and rode happily to Hradek. I checked the bus schedule and saw I had time for a beer at the local hospoda and waited for the bus. Unfortunately, I soon realized the bus I was waiting for only ran on the weekend, and the bus I had ridden into town was in fact the last bus coming that day. And it had started to rain while I was waiting and I hadn’t gone inside for fear of missing said bus. It was a solid downpour. I was looking at my map and preparing myself for a long hike in the rain when I saw a pension in town denoted on the map. Pensions are not always well-advertised, and sometimes they just look like someone’s house with no sign indicating they take boarders. I went back to the hospoda to get directions. The barmaid didn’t know where it was but fortunately one of the trusty regulars did. He even gave me the name of the woman who ran the pension. I found it pretty quickly but was still drenched when I arrived. I felt a little like George Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life” when he goes to Ma Bailey’s boarding-house door and she cracks it open, gives him the stinkeye, and asks “Who sent you?” Mrs. Volačkova called down to me from a window, and at first told me they only rented rooms on weekends (it was a Thursday). I said something like “But not tonight?” and I must have looked bedraggled because she conferred with Mr. Volaček and let me in. I had the whole place to myself. Two double beds, bath, kitchen, and dining area. All I paid was $7.50. If you are ever in Hradek, you should certainly stay there.

When traveling in the Czech Republic, you will invariably happen upon these strange religious relics, stuck on the side of the road where there is no other sign of civilization. I cannot figure out what they are for. They are too old to be some place-marker for the untimely death of some pedestrian, cyclist, or motorist. They don’t seem to be radiating good luck for my travels, as they do not feature St. Christopher. Usually it is a crucifix or a Holy Mary with forlorn, upturned, egg-white eyes. I don’t know why this look is inspiring.

I have a limited wardrobe here and I’ve found it difficult to find the proper cycling uniform. Shirts are no problem, but all my pants and shorts are denim, and since it rains here daily in the evening, I’m consistently biking around in wet shorts. Very uncomfortable. I do have one pair of nice poly capris that seemed perfect for the task. I tried these out on yet another ride to Susice. Despite my attempts to discern a route both short and hill-free, there are some strenuous stretches on the way, especially after Čejkový. I bought these capris early in college and lately I’ve found they don’t fit as they used to. Due to some ill-thought design, the capris close with a bit of Velcro and those little square plastic snaps often found on the two-dollar ponchos that can be purchased outside Kinnick Stadium (Cyclone fans always bring their own respectable rainwear). With these snaps, the poor fit and my straining to ascend hills, I found myself halfway up a hill and losing my pants. The Velcro and three of the snaps had undone themselves and my blue underwear was exposed for all to see. Fortunately few motorists use these roads and I was wearing an extra-long tank top so I managed to pull it down to cover my derierre. It was Sunday, after all. At the top of the hill I came upon yet another Holy Mary with bulging eyes, looking as if she disapproved. I made a sign of the cross just in case and I’ve since returned to biking with wet shorts.

So, the last time I was in the Czech Republic, I did a lot of hiking. A LOT of hiking. Fortunately this time I realized there are other ways to travel, and after digging around in an old barn at the farm, I came across some lovely old bikes. One is this Swiss cruiser with a mixte frame and I cannot figure out who made it. Its components are from the late 80′s. However, it needs new tubes so I am currently riding the other gem I found, a kelly green road bike made by the Czech company Favorit. This bike was made in Československo, and dates to 1969. The company started making bikes in 1870 (not a typo) and is still making bikes today.

This bicycle is allowing me a certain amount of freedom I didn’t have before. The buses here run at times that are inconvenient for me, the working girl. I have no car. And as previously stated, I’m through with this walking thing. So I have been cruising around all the small towns on my way to the nearest big town, Sušice. Towns here are really just collections of houses for the 100-odd residents. However, every town, no matter how small, has a bus stop and a recycling center, and most have a payphone.

The roads here are just screaming for some mad bike touring. The Czech Republic has a well-established trail system, both for hikers and bikers. The bike trails vary in quality; some a mountain-bike only and others, while labeled as road bike-worthy, are in desparate need of repair (a little jaw-rattling). Mostly they are nice asphalt though, and there is little to no traffic. It does make me a little nervous when there is a car though, as there are never any shoulders and roads don’t seem to be quite wide enough for two cars. But there are rarely two cars, and motorists are pretty respectful of bikers here. I am always given a wide berth.

The region I am in is just north of Šumava, a large national park in the Czech Republic. Sušice is called “the gateway to Šumava”. So it is gorgeous here. Lots of rolling hills and countryside. Being here is really like a throwback to 1938. Although this is all farmland, you rarely see tractors and when you do, they are all small. Some of the hay is baled, but it is common to see groups of ten people making haystacks out in the fields. There is a wide variety of crops and animals here. Since the Czech Republic was behind the Iron Curtain during the agri-business boom of the 80′s in America, farms here are still small operations and you don’t see monoculture. I ride by barley, wheat, corn, potatoes, beans, canola, dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, and horses. It is a beautiful sight.

One of my favorite things to see is the deer springing though the fields. They are smaller here. The rabbits are huge (think large turkey-sized) and so are the snails (size of my pinky with a golf ball-sized shell). I usually pass lots of fish ponds with ducks and frogs. I’ve seen a dead mole. When I go through towns, there are always chickens all over the place. I also get shouted at by old men whenever I go though Tedražice. The last time I went came around the corner in Zybnice, I happened across two dogs happily attached to one another. So really I came for the wildlife.

If you are interested, my typical biking route is Miřenice, Otěšin, Sedlečko, Čejkovy, Tedražice, to Sušice. Check it out on Google Maps/Earth.
